About tourism

1.1 Definition of tourism

Let’s first kick off with the official definition of tourism according to Encyclopedia Britannica: “The act and process of spending time away from home in pursuit of recreation, relaxation, and pleasure, while making use of the commercial provision of services“.

According to this definition in the very early days, when people generally only traveled to find food or to escape dangerous situations, you couldn´t speak of tourism yet. After people started to settle down, new reasons to travel emerged: trade, war, religion (pilgrimage), work, education, and even status. Traveling and people spending time outside of their normal environment became more common during the Egyptian and Roman empires, and it has been a constant factor of human culture ever since. Traveling for fun was still something exclusive for the rich or the real adventurers, and tourism as we currently know it took many more years to develop.
